SOFT AND LOVING FUNDRAISER FOR THE FWAC DOGS
Greyhound Affair will be selling a special edition tee shirt (see below) for $35 each. For every tee shirt sold, $10 will go towards the purchase of a brand new soft flannel dog bed made by Caddis to aid in each FWAC dog's recovery. It is our goal to raise funds to purchase brand new dog beds for the FWAC dogs that were taken in by several adoption groups. All monies left over after the purchase and shipment of the dog beds will be divided equally among all the groups who took these dogs in to go towards medical care or whatever is needed for the dogs.
We feel by purchasing brand new dog beds for each of the dogs, it will aid them during their recovery because many have pressure sores. This will also relieve some of the stress from their foster parents as well by having a dedicated bed for each recovering dog. These dog beds will go WITH THE DOG once it is healthy and lovingly adopted as a gift from all who stood in support of the dogs and the groups who took them in. It will be theirs to keep with love.
This fundraiser will end when all of the FWAC dogs have new beds.
THE STORY ABOUT THE FWAC DOGS
This story will absolutely break your heart - especially if you see the graphic photos of some of the dogs before they started receiving treatment. If you are the slightest bit squeamish, I do not advise looking at the photos. I do advise having a box of tissues nearby - you will need them.
Fort Worth Animal Control Cruelty Investigation Officers took 28 dogs into custody Thursday night, July 8, 2010. GALT (Greyhound Adoption League of Texas) was contacted as greyhounds were included in the seize. At GALT’s request, Greyhounds Unlimited (GU) joined in this effort, as GALT and GU are the only adoption groups in the DFW/north Texas area to help stray and shelter greyhounds. Friday morning, representatives from GALT and GU met with Diane Whiteley, the Executive Director of the Texas Greyhound Association, to assess the dogs. Eight were taken by each group. Wednesday, July 14, GALT took one more female and with that now all 28 dogs are with adoption groups.
The condition of GALT's 9
greyhounds is absolutely appalling and shocking. Weights on the
females and males range from 35 to 51 pounds. Besides being
extremely thin, each dog was covered with more ticks than can be ever
imagined. All the greys were evaluated by Dr. Jeff Ellis and Dr.
Christy Soileau of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital. Friday it was
determined that Nate, a 3-year-old brindle male, should be taken to the
Collin County Animal Emergency Clinic because his packed cell volume was
12. Friday evening he received two units of whole blood. The
veterinarian estimated a staff of 4 technicians removed 1500 ticks from
his body - and that is after a team of GALT volunteers worked 2 hours
bathing and removing ticks.
Graphic photos Six days after the seizure took place, one more Greyhound, 2 1/2 yr old Kiowa Braden, was found dumped in a park within several miles of where the seizure took place. Although it is yet to be determined if he was one of the Greyhounds from the place where the other 28 dogs were taken from, Kiowa Braden's condition was far worse than the others. Too weak to stand on his own, he was taken to animal control and placed under a 72 hour hold law since he was not part of the seizure. He was finally released to GALT on Sunday and was taken immediately to the emergency clinic to be evaluated and treated. Sadly, Braden lost his struggle at age 2 1/2 due to total renal failure exacerbated by the horrific medical state he was found in just 2 days after being released to GALT. GALT vows to get the 72 hour hold law changed in honor of Braden so his death will not be in vain.
Many people, vendors and individuals alike are coming together and standing in support to help financially with the medical expenses which are expected to run into the thousands of dollars for each dog possibly for months. While many are doing fundraisers such as auctions, etc., we decided to do a different fundraiser.
Won't you please consider purchasing a special edition tee shirt in the size of your choice to help these special Greyhounds get a new bed - they deserve a chance at a decent, loving, healthy life don't you think?
Thanks for opening your heart and helping.
