Greyfest 2011: East meets West
Saturday October 22
12pm - 4pm
River Legacy Park
703 NW Green Oaks Blvd Arlington TX
The days are getting shorter. The weathermen keep teasing us with
predictions of cooler weather. The State Fair starts today. That
must mean Fall is upon us and here at GU that means one thing: it's
time for Greyfest!
This year we wanted to do something a little bit different. In
looking for ideas, we discovered that 2011 is the Chinese Year of
the Rabbit. Hmm. Rabbit -- Greyhound: it's an age-old paring, so we
thought we would celebrate the Year of the Rabbit at Greyfest. Look
for an Asian theme to our decorations and treats. And help us keep
the theme with your costumes in our annual Costume Parade.
Of course, since this is Texas, we can't go all the way Eastern with
our theme. Luncheon will once again be catered by the wonderful
Mercado Juarez. And we will have Seeing-Red Margaritas being sold
for just $4 a glass. As always, we will have many other things for
you to do over the course of the afternoon.
- Our Greyt Live Auction, with some really special items this year,
- Silent Auction featuring artwork, jewelry and many other terrific
items,
- The Greyt Roo Raffle,
- GU's Online Store - live and fully stocked for your shopping
pleasure,
- Camp Greyhound Martingale Collars,
- Shannon O'Reilly Handcrafted Jewelry,
- Animal Communication by Sandra Larson, ($20 for a 15 min session),
- Nail Trimming, nominal fee, 100% proceeds to GU,
- GU's Adoption Booth.
And stay tuned to eNews and GU's Facebook page, as we are continuing
to work on more surprises and activities for you.
Now, since this is also a fund-raising event for us, all of this fun
comes with a price, albeit a small one. Just $12 per person get you
the delicious luncheon from Mercado Juarez and access the activities
and vendors. You can make your reservations one of two ways: mail a
check to Greyhounds Unlimited, ATTN: Greyfest 2011, PO Box 703967,
Dallas, TX 75370-3967 -OR- online through the GU Online Store.
Either way, we ask that you please reply by October 14, 2011 so we
can make the appropriate arrangements with Mercado Juarez.
We at GU look forward to Greyfest all year as it gives us an
opportunity to reconnect with our adopters and all the hounds that
have passed through the group over the years. It also gives you, our
adopters, a chance to meet other members of the GU family and spend
an afternoon with other greyhound lovers, as well as a chance to
shop for interesting and unusual greyhound related items that we
keep an eye out for all year long.
So, get those reservations in so we know to expect you, and come on
out and spend the afternoon with us.
Confucius say: One who does not attend Greyfest will miss out on a
good time!

Groups wanting to "advertise" their
Greyhound Planet event can send their brief event details to me and I
will post them in order by state/country right here for all to see.
As of Tuesday, June 30, 2009, PETCO and the
PETCO Foundation are no longer the official host/sponsors for
GREYHOUND PLANET.
The sole intention for GREYHOUND PLANET was
to benefit the GREYHOUNDS specifically - to gain national attention and
awareness about the Greyhounds as pets. I will not allow anyone to
diminish the importance of this event for Greyhounds by opening it up to
other breed groups and changing the name without my permission. I
understand the importance of fundraising and adoption in all groups (not
just Greyhound groups) but if I wanted it to include all breeds, this
event would not have been named GREYHOUND PLANET.
Total funds raised by year:
2002 = $57,232.00
2003 = $78,289.00
2004 = $114,365.00
2005 = $119,118.00
2006 = $232,000.00
2007 = $264,000.00
2008 = $240,364.41
GRAND TOTAL: $1,105,368.41 DOLLARS

THE ORIGINAL STORY OF GREYHOUND PLANET
In early 2002, an article that was printed
in a Kentucky newspaper was sent to Therese Skinner by a friend. Her
friend knew Therese had adopted Greyhounds and thought she would enjoy
the newspaper article. It was about a local event for a Greyhound
adoption group called Homes for Hounds. During this event, kids
held bake sales, garage sales, sponsored walks and went door to door to
raise funds.
A couple of months later, Therese heard about the Guidant
Research lab testing Greyhounds for a pacemaker study. Hundreds of
Greyhounds were used in this study and subsequently only a few were
rescued. The story brought headlines nationwide and Greyhound lovers
tried their best to help the ones who made it out to safety from the
research lab.
Another story made headlines about the same time. It was a
story about Greyhounds being taken illegally over the Alabama/Florida
state line to be killed when they were no longer needed for racing. This
story made national headlines as well. Thousands of the bodies of dead
Greyhounds were found on a farm, most shot through the head and left to
die buried in a shallow mass grave.
Because of her passion to help Greyhounds all over the world
and knowing how tragic both stories were, she knew something needed to
be done to draw national attention to the Greyhounds. Therese set out
on a mission to come up with an idea to help the hounds and that's when
she remembered the newspaper article that was sent to her a few months
before. The story of kids trying to raise money for the local Greyhound
adoption group was inspiring and Therese took that idea and turned it
into a larger event to encompass every Greyhound adoption group out
there. She forwarded her idea on to Greyhound
rescue groups and Greyhound adopters. The feedback was phenomenal. When PETCO and the PETCO Foundation heard about the first event being planned
through a volunteer, they offered their support as well - thus starting
the first Greyhound Planet event in September 2002.
As 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 rolled around,
Greyhound Planet grew bigger and bigger where over $1,000,000 has been
raised by the event to date. The monies raised goes back to all of
the partnering Greyhound Planet groups to help the hounds in their local
area.
Greyhound Planet was the only breed specific event that a nationwide pet supply store hosted annually. Therese never
thought in her wildest imagination that her idea would have these
results. Although it is hard work, the reward is far more than she ever
anticipated, especially when she shares her victory with more than 350
Greyhound adoption groups all over the world and most importantly, the Greyhounds.
Please join us for Greyhound Planet and celebrate
Greyhounds all over the world. Greyhound Planet is the largest worldwide
event to benefit the most gentle and loving breed we share our
lives with - the Greyhounds.
